 What are We Doing?

Reading and Writing

Math

Red      Yellow

       Blue          Green      Black

     Purple      Brown       Pink

Orange       White

Can you read these color words?  We have been working on recognizing the color words through reading poems and  books. We have also been workinng on recognizing  our own names and names of our friends.

We are writng labels on pictures we draw and we have been riting lists of stuff! Lists of animals we like, lists of friends, family, lists of our favorite foods. We love to write  lists!

 Algebra

Yes! In kindergarten we are building the foundation for algebra by learning how patterns work. Algebra is finding the pattern in a series of numbers. We learn that repeating patterns have a section that repeats over and over. And that a pattern  continues on and on in both directions forever.

Where do we see patterns around us? keep an eye out and see what you can find.

Science

Why is the sky blue? Where does the
rain come from? Why are some animals
furry and some are not? Where do polar
bears live? Why do magnets  stick to the
 refrigerator?
Science is all about asking questions and investigating and researching to find out the answers.

We began the year investigating who scientists are and how scientists work safely and orderly.  Now we are in the middle of our Physical Science study of Magnetism. We have learned a lot from our exploration and investigations. Here are some things we have learned:

Magnets stick to chair legs, marker board,  some pencil ends, paper clips, door frame, another magnet, windows with wires in them.

Magnets do not stick to pennies, chair seat, crayons, door, paper, books, window with no wire, unifix cubes, blocks, clothes.

Magnets must stay away from Miss Fairchild's computer.( or any computer)

Magnets have a north and a south side or end.

Same sides don't like each other, they repel or push away. Different sides like each other, they attract or pull together.

Magnets can pull through things.

Magnets have different amount of power.

Social Studies

We will begin the year learning the routines for our class and the school When we all know and follow the rules and routines we can all do our best .

We will also learn about leaders in our homes, school and community. Why do we need these leaders, what do they do for us?
